Students from University of Santo Tomas (UST) felt blessed as their university was the chosen venue for the youth encounter of Pope Francis last Sunday, January 18, 2015.
“The fact that there are a lot of other Catholic schools in the Philippines, our school was chosen and it just feels wonderful to be given an opportunity like this and to be a part of this once in a lifetime event that will go down in history”, Mayumi Suzuki, a BS Microbiology student
If given a chance to meet Pope Francis, Suzuki will thank the pope for the inspiration and hope.
“I would thank him for taking the time to visit our country, for giving the Filipinos hope once again and for showing kindness and love for the poor. I would also ask him to pray for me and for our country so that all of us may become good individuals and live better lives” she added.
BSBA Financial Management student Anna Fatima David felt the excitement of Pope Francis’ visit in UST.
“Sobrang naexcite ako nung lumabas ‘yung news na pupunta siya sa UST. ‘Tas may feeling na nasa tip na ng fingers ko yung opportunity na makita siya or makamayan. I didn’t feel lucky. I felt blessed”, David expressed.
Jana Paula Vergara, a future accountant, felt the same way. “Proud and blessed na isa sa mga pinuntahan ni Pope ang UST. If ever na makaharap or makausap ko si Pope, I will thank him and ask him to pray for me and for our whole country”, Vergara told.
BS Medical Technology student Raphael Gumafelix believed that UST was not only chosen because it is a Pontifical university.
“I feel blessed but I think UST was chosen not just because it is the only Pontifical university in the Philippines, but because God has a bigger purpose, and that is to unite the fallen, the youth and the poor”, he explained.
University of Santo Tomas is considered as Royal and Pontifical University in the Philippines, Thomasians are privileged to welcome members of royal families and Catholic Church’s executives inside their campus.
