According to the dictionary, Love is an intense feeling of affection and care towards another person. Everyone has the ability to give and receive love. The only difference nowadays is the process in which love goes through. This is what we called as the traditional and electronic processes or stages of getting into a romantic relationship.
Finding your ka-sparks: “Love isn’t something you find. Love is something that finds you.” –Loretta Young, American Actress
Parents often say to their children not to rush things when it comes to falling in love. Some also say that true love is just out there to find you so it is better to wait patiently. In short, True love waits. But if you’re not a patient type of person, you will definitely exert extra efforts to look for your Mr. or Ms. Right.
Back to the old times, couples find and communicate with each other through pen pals. Here, they send love letters with each other and eventually fall in love with the words. Lots of parents nowadays can relate to this for sure. Common friends will also help to find special someone. It is popularly known as the colloquial Tagalog term “reto”.
As the new technology rose, looking for your true love is becoming easier and faster. Viber, Kik, SnapChat, WeChat, and Line are just examples of the most popular messaging applications for smartphones. In these messaging apps, a person can send messages and call to other person using the same app. They can even find others with their same interests. Of course, with the use of Internet, it became very easier and cheaper to talk to people from other countries.
JR Gannaban, a 20-year old student told his experiences with his chatmates on the messaging app WeChat: “Walang nag-udyok sakin na mag-WeChat, na-curious ako kaya sinubukan ko mag-download ng WeChat hanggang sa naadik ako kaka-chat sa mga strangers,” he said.
Another popular apps and website are Tinder and Omegle. Tinder is a matchmaking application that uses geo-location technology to find a match within the set distance. On the other hand, Omegle is an online chat website which allows users to communicate without the need to register. The site randomly pairs in one-on-one chat sessions with strangers using the usernames ‘You’ and ‘Stranger’. Later on, Omegle also became available as a downloadable mobile application.
Courtship here, there and everywhere: “This is courtship all the world over- The men all tongue, the women all ears.” –Emily Murphy, Canadian women’s rights activist
Many lovers will agree that courtship is one of the most exciting stages of getting into a relationship. On a traditional way, boys will be the one to court the girls by sending flowers, chocolates and other gifts. Boys also do house visits to meet the girl’s parents to show respect. They also ask permission to the girl’s parents on asking dates. Curfews are very important to obey by the suitors.
Meanwhile, modernized ‘panliligaw’ are in different forms now. Aside from using the messaging applications on your phone, Facebook chat is more popular especially to those who don’t have smartphones or Android phones. The advantage of Facebook to messaging apps is the capability to view personal profiles, pictures, and posts of users. Furthermore, courtship on text messages is also very famous to teenagers and adults. Here, you won’t need internet; just prepaid loads will do for unlimited texting.
However, not everyone chooses to use these modern ways of communicating with the one they like. Some people would still rather receive or give a letter that takes forever to write.
For Andrea Perez, a student from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, says that love letters has been and always will be the best for her, as they are handy and she can read it anytime she wants to.
"Handwritten letters can be kept forever but a text message can be deleted in a snap," says Perez.
The effort matters the most for Nina Joyce Consignado, a student from Bulacan State University. She said that she thinks love letters are sweeter because she sees more effort in guys who write love letters despite not being blessed with a good handwriting and is too lazy to write down what they feel.
"Kapag kasi sa text madaling burahin kapag may mali. Pero pag sulat kamay, alam mo na nakailang scratch paper pa ‘yan para lang maisulat ng tama ang mga gusto niyang sabihin sa’yo,” claims Consignado.
The Relationships stage: “Distance makes the heart grow fonder.” -Anonymous
So let’s say you’ve already found a partner and passed the courting stage, getting into a relationship is definitely the next stage. The most common and traditional routine of lovers are movie dates, lunch and dinner dates, and of course house visits again. Parents will truly adore guys if they have the respect to show up in their house and enjoy family bonding. While these traditional types of lovers enjoy each personally, couples in a long distance relationship are far from these kinds of experiences.
Facebook and video calls on Skype are the things that connect them. Ria Ann Zabalerio a Filipina who lives in California, USA shared her thoughts about being in a long distance relationship for a couple of years with her boyfriend here in the Philippines.
“Noon, Viber at Ulink. Ngayon mas komportable na lang kami sa Facebook Messenger at ‘yung regular text message using roaming sim ko. Para naman magklita kami, Skype [ang ginagamit namin],” she said.
California and Philippines has a time difference of 16 hours so she admitted that at first, they never thought that long distance relationship would work. They broke up before she migrated in California.
“I guess we’re just afraid and not feel secured kaya nag-break kami. Then after a year, binalikan niya ‘ko. And yes, true that we need to give it a try on everything and work on it with trust and communication to your partner”, she concluded. Ria Ann and her boyfriend will celebrate their 2nd anniversary this coming April 12.
These three stages of getting into a romantic relationship will surely explain that love moves in mysterious ways (whether traditional way or electronic way). Love is universal, it is for everyone. Love knows no boundaries, distance won’t matter as long as lovers communicate and trust each other. Most importantly, true love will always be worth the wait. No need to rush things up.
